Your Donation makes a difference in lives of animals like Purdy. Purdy’s owner noticed that she wasn’t feeling well and took her to an emergency clinic where she was diagnosed with a pyometra.
What is a pyometra? A pyometra is a life threatening infection the uterus.
Who can have a pyometra? Any female animal is susceptible to having this occur.
Why does it happen? As dogs and cats age their uterine muscles become weak and cannot flush out the normal fluids that occur during a heat cycle. This creates an infection within the uterus and that causes the dog or cat to get fatally ill.
How do you treat this? Pyometra can be treated with antibiotics IF it is caught in the early stages, but it is often not. The only “cure” is to spay the dog or cat. A spay is a complete hysterectomy and by removing the uterus you remove the source if infection.
Purdy is a sweet 10 year old corgi that is owned by a family that loves her dearly. She hadn’t been spayed yet, her owners had no idea that something like this could happen-most people don’t. Purdy was “off” and she became worse and stopped eating. Her family was extremely worried and took her to an ER. It was there that she was diagnosed with a pyometra. The surgery there was close to $2000 and that was just out of the budget. The vet sent her home with antibiotics and pain medication with instructions to see a vet ASAP for surgery. Purdy’s family called multiple places and was not able to be seen because of finances.
This is where we stepped in. Purdy’s case is something that we hear too often! We were introduced to Purdy’s family at an event where they told us about their experience. We knew that we had to step in and help Purdy. We called our AMAZING veterinary team and they all donated their time to come in on a Saturday afternoon to help Purdy.
Purdy needed surgery immediately! Her uterus was dangerously close to rupturing, and that would have meant that all of that infection would be free floating in her abdomen. We were able to successfully remove that nasty uterus and save Purdy.
“Very kind, compassionate staff!! Lisa went out of her way to help us, even brining staff after hours to give my little corgi the life saving surgery she needed. I spent the entire day calling every vet in Polk County to try to get her in, but they either didn’t have an opening or it was soooo expensive we couldn’t afford it. At current prices, the clinic operates a deficit of at least $10 per surgery on cats and at least $30 per surgery on dogs. We rely on donations to offset this deficit and to continue to keep our pricing as low as possible. Your generous support helps us to reach animals that would not otherwise be served.
