Mondays with Moody: Hurricane Preparedness

Happy Monday, human friends! We had a little bit of rain over the weekend. It was the kind that makes you want to curl up in your favorite spot and snooze the day away. But it also go me thinking about my next blog. I know ol’ Moody is your favorite new resource for pet tips, so here’s a big one: Be prepared for hurricanes!

The Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. So far this year it’s been pretty quiet, but don’t let that fool you. We’re getting into the heart of hurricane season, and they can pop up out of nowhere. The best thing to do is have a plan in place. Have your supplies, and make sure your hurricane kit is fully stocked with your family’s needs. This includes your fur-family. Here are a few friendly reminders!

1. Be sure to pack enough food and water in your emergency kit for each pet to cover at least two weeks. If your pets are on any medication, make sure you have at least a couple of weeks worth of their prescriptions. If you have pets that are extra anxious, consider talking to your vet about anxiety medication for them, too.

2. Make sure that their identification and contact information on their tags and their microchips are up-to-date, and exchange contact information with your neighbors, especially other neighbors with pets.

3. Take clear, current photos of each pet in case they get lost. Many pets look similar, and these will go a long way in reuniting them with you.

4. Research pet-friendly hurricane shelters in the area in case you’re forced to evacuate. Your local emergency management office can help with this.

I hope you never have to worry about your pets in the event of a major storm. But having a plan in place is always a good idea. Now, excuse me while I go test out a few new sleeping spots so I have a plan in place for the next afternoon shower! See y’all next Monday!
